Obos and Wood Sculptures
Tsutakawa discovered the concept of Obos, or ritually piled rocks, when he read “Beyond the High Himalayas” by Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. The artist took a trekking trip to the Himalaya Mountains in 1977, at the age of 67 and witnessed the rock piles made by pilgrims as they passed a significant point in their journey. He used the concept of Obos in wood and metal sculptures.
